County budget earns national recognition

The Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) recently announced that Cabarrus County is a GFOA's Distinguished Budget Presentation Award recipient for the Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 budget.

This is the 21st consecutive year the County has received the recognition.

The award represents a significant achievement by the County. It reflects the commitment of the governing body and staff to meet the highest principles of governmental budgeting.

To receive the award, the County’s budget documents had to meet proficiency in four nationally recognized categories, and in the fourteen mandatory criteria within those categories. The assessment measures how well an entity's budget serves as a:

  • Policy document
  • Financial plan
  • Operations guide
  • Communications device

In recognition of the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, GFOA granted the Cabarrus County Budget Office with a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation.

County Manager Mike Downs will present his FY2020 budget at the May 20 Board of Commissioners Regular Meeting at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting chambers of the Government Center (65 Church Street S, Concord). A public hearing on the budget is scheduled to take place at the June 17 regular meeting at 6:30 p.m.

Residents interested in learning more about the County’s budget process are encouraged to participate in the County’s Government 101: FY20 Budget Breakdown workshop on June 14 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The day includes interactive discussions about budget highlights, panels, activities and demonstrations that guide residents through the County’s fiscal plan for the coming year.
