Facility services supervisor credits ‘incredible’ team that keeps County safe

Cabarrus County’s facility services team has always been an indispensable part of County operations. That’s never been more apparent than when the pandemic began.

“We were ready with the proper equipment, PPE and disinfectant chemicals,” said Matt Tardugno, who’s served as the facility services supervisor since 2013. “My team was prepared and stepped up big time.”

His crew consists of 28 employees servicing 27 facilities and parks across the county. These locations total more than 760,000 square feet of grounds, and facility services is responsible for all of it.

The team takes care of day-to-day cleanliness to provide safe and sanitary spaces for the public and employees. The group is also responsible for security, furniture relocations, mail courier services, event set-ups and much more.

When COVID hit, “we immediately implemented additional disinfection and cleaning procedures on top of our everyday responsibilities,” he said. “Every department relied on us to disinfect and sanitize their workspaces and buildings. The team also increased their daily tasks, such as restroom cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces.

“COVID-19 has been terrible, but I’m thankful it’s given my staff and our industry a chance to shine and show that the jobs we do every day are important and appreciated.”

Matt said he’s most proud of the efforts and teamwork his crew demonstrated over the last year. “My staff isn’t the type to look for praise or accolades, but I want to make sure their efforts are seen and heard,” Matt said.

Even as the pandemic slows, the work performed by facility services remains crucial to delivering important services to Cabarrus residents.

They help maintain the momentum.

“When another employee is leaving the building late in the evening and they have a flat tire or a dead battery, the first person they regularly call is the custodian,” he said. “When someone forgets their badge or keys in the morning, they call the custodian. When someone needs a door opened for them, they call a custodian. When something goes wrong in the building, the custodian is the first one on scene.”

“That’s my staff and I’m so proud to work with this incredible group of people.”
