Crisis Negotiation Unit

The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office Crisis Negotiation Unit works to defuse potentially life-threatening situations without loss of life, and preferably without use of force.

This is done through the use of proven verbal crisis management and communication techniques. The unit responds to situations such as armed and/or barricaded subjects or hostage situations.

Crisis negotiators are often called out simultaneously with the Special Response Team, so the team members from each unit often train together.

Once selected, the officers undergo vigorous, specialized training to be prepared for high-risk situations..

Team responsibilities also include building communication links, investigating background information, psychological profiles and conducting witness debriefings. This information can be used by all responders to reach a peaceful resolution.
