Cabarrus This Week: Cabarrus seniors line up to give back medications

Cabarrus seniors line up to give back medications

Community paramedics visit LunchPlus Club drive-thru sites

Cabarrus County seniors lined up their vehicles and delivered nearly 60 pounds of unused and expired prescriptions to local LunchPlus Club sites from April 20-22. The events were organized by Cabarrus County’s Community Paramedics to educate seniors on medication disposal and provide them with resources from EMS’ “Do the Right Thing” program, which teaches proper prescription management.

Community Paramedics and the LunchPlus Club are both programs of Cabarrus County Government.

When EMS Captain Kara Clarke ran through scenarios, she realized the County’s LunchPlus Club Program would be the best way to connect with seniors. Each weekday, local seniors can receive a free meal at drive-thru sites in Concord, Midland, Harrisburg, Kannapolis, Mt. Pleasant and Northwest Cabarrus. The format was convenient, familiar and allowed for COVID-19 safety.

The seniors showed up in a big way—grateful for the opportunity to remove the medications from their home.
